SAFH’s Excellence in School Wellness Awards – Summary

In June 2011, SAFH recognized 51 schools at our Award ceremonies for their hard work to create a wellness of culture. Over 150 representatives came together to celebrate the winners, including individuals from schools, community based organizations, and government agencies.

Physical Education and Physical Activity

While our Wellness Award has revealed significant accomplishments that NYC elementary schools have been able to attain, data also shows the hurdles and challenges that schools face in the area of physical education and physical activity.
As mentioned at the ceremony, SAfH would like to invite you to a meeting we are hosting with other Wellness Award recipients to plan a “realistic” strategy that will increase a school’s opportunity to lead physical activity initiatives and physical education classes.

If you or a member of your school team is interested in participating in this discussion please email Nicole Collins at ncollins@health.nyc.gov

Academic Edible Gardens!

Lastly, Birds Nest Foundations’ “Ground Up Campaign” will provide all 51 winning schools with an in-class edible academic garden accompanied by “Veggiecation,” an innovative nutrition education companion.  At the start of the 2011 – 2012 school year SAfH along with the Bird Nest Foundation will schedule a formal event where your school will be able to pick up your in-class edible academic garden.

Congratulations to all 51 NYC elementary schools!
