HTW # 117: Why should you protect yourself from the sun? Ultraviolet Rays (UV) are powerful rays coming from the sun that cause skin cancer, which is the most common type of cancer in the United States. UV rays can also be damaging to the eye, can weaken your immune system, give you wrinkles and age spots. It’s easy to protect yourself from UV rays by a few simple steps: wear proper clothing that protects your skin, avoid being in the sun too long, try to stay in the shade, and apply sunscreen. When using sunscreen, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends having a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 for minimum protection. Make sure you follow these simple steps to avoid looking old before your time, and to help protect yourself from getting skin cancer!
