Come find out more about what it takes to bring a Play Street to your community. Play Streets are temporary street closures that occur on a weekly basis to give children a safe place to play outdoors. Play Streets bring neighborhoods together, help reduce obesity, and improve street safety. This summer is almost over, but it's already time to start planning for 2013 Play Streets!
With the support of community groups across the city, Transportation Alternatives successfully persuaded the Bloomberg administration in 2011 to include Play Streets in PlaNYC as a key strategy to improve open space access for children during the summer. The program has since been endorsed by First Lady Obama's Let's Move! campaign. T.A. helps communities secure street closure permits, find community partners and obtain mini-grants so that Play Streets can thrive across New York City. T.A. has also developed several reports and resources for groups to learn how to start up a Play Street: transalt.org/playstreets
