In an effort to create healthier selections at bodegas throughout New York City, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has implemented the Healthy Bodegas Initiative. Through this initiative, communities are working to increase fruit, vegetable, low-fat, low-sodium and other healthier options at their local corner stores. Join Madea Allen-Gueye for this food demo at 2154 8th Avenue (at 116th Street) during which she will show you what nutritious creations you can prepare after a quick trip to your local bodega.

Bringing a chef to a local bodega is a great start for the Harlem Community. I would love it if we had a chef at the local bodegas teaching us how to prepare food that is available to create healthy meals! Another thing that would be helpful is if the chef can partner up with the bodegas and sell healthy meals that are pre-made. I would definitely purchase such food, because I often don't have time to cook due to my busy schedule. Given the hustle and bustle of NYC, my bet is that there are many other people out there who feel the same way.
