A group of students from City College are working it at the Compare Supermarket located on 138th and Broadway. They are part of a Health and Wellness class (Science 31350.) This course challenges students to use practical and classroom knowledge to address critical public health issues facing under-served populations. Students examine the health profile of Harlem to identify and develop solutions to prevalent health issues affecting the community. This semester, the focus of the class is on cardiovascular diseases and students are fighting obesity, a major risk factor of the deadly disease. For their intervention, they set up a table and offer to educate the supermarket patrons about the role of nutrition in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Free healthy snacks are presented to those who accept to fill out a very short survey, along with some free heart healthy recipes for the holidays. Please join them December 2-5, 2012 at Compare Foods (Broadway and 136th St.) and learn a thing or two about healthy eating habits!
