In an effort to create healthier selections at bodegas throughout New York City, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has implemented the Healthy Bodegas Initiative. Through this initiative, communities are working to increase fruit, vegetable, low-fat, low-sodium and other healthier options at their local corner stores.

I went to the supermarket yesterday because I decided that I didn't want to order out and I wanted to cook a healthy meal. I know how to cook meat, vegetables, rice, etc. But, the problem isn't cooking the food but picking out the food to cook. I never know if the meat that I picked has too much fat or is too red or if the fruit that I picked was too soft or too hard.
I was just watching the Rachael Ray show and they had someone (Liz Vaccariello) on there that showed you how to make healthy choices when eating at a vending machine. Surprisingly, if you want chips Veggie chips can be just as bad as regular chips - so can baked chips! Apparently Soy Crisps are much healthier.
Chris Daly's organization Hip4Kids helps educate kids and their parents about eating and cooking healthier. Hip4Kids has been providing free cooking demos, lectures, health fairs and events for all 5 boroughs for the past 8-9 years, including providing the content for NYC Parks' "Wake Up/Shape Up" program.
