The Kids Cook Monday

Editor March 4th, 2011

Childhood obesity is an increasingly evident problem among kids in NYC.  Why?  Because kids watch and learn from adults; poor eating habits of adults are strongly reflected in kids.  In order to combat childhood obesity, The Kids Cook Monday classes focus on children.

The Kids Cook Monday nutrition classes empower kids to consider what they are eating.  The purpose of the class was to help these families learn how to cook healthy, inexpensive, delicious and heart-healthy meals together.

The Kids Cook Monday is a weekly opportunity for families to take health into their own hands.  The class provides examples of kid-friendly recipes and video demonstrations along with nutrition and safety tips to make it easier for families to cook and eat together every Monday.

Recently, the Harlem Health Promotion Center, the Healthy Monday Campaign, and The Center for food and Environment at Teacher College Columbia University conducted two three week family nutrition classes for eighteen families from the Harlem community.

Not only do these classes teach children how to cook healthy meals and learn which foods are healthy, but help family spend valuable time together.
