Harlem Word: Sid Howard – Self-care tips for runners

Sid Howard, an active member of Central Park Track Club, and winner of countless awards, has been running for more than three decades. He understands the challenges of keeping up with a regular fitness schedule. Here, he tells us how important it is to take good care of your general health when you exercise and how to get started running yourself.

Q: How do you keep yourself in physical and mental shape for running?

A: Maintaining good health is the most important thing with running. This includes eating the right foods, stretching, practicing drills, and getting massages. If you can find a partner to run with, that is really great, because this helps you stay motivated. I run with my wife, and that really helps me to stay motivated.

Being on a team also helps you to push yourself. There are all kinds of teams out there - those for elite athletes, some for runners of all abilities, and those with more of a social focus. You can find a team through New York Road Runners or if you are at a race, just ask other runners who they run with.

Running is pretty healthy thing, the more you run, the more you burn those calories. I personally think that Sid does really good job even envolving his wife into running. If i ever get time to go to gym i get on that treadmill and run. Afterwards i feel more enthusiastic and i feel that i get lots of energy.
