Harlem Word: Dr. David Bell talks about the Young Men’s Clinic in Harlem

In this Harlem Word, Dr. David Bell, MD, MP, talks about the services that the Young Men's Health Clinic offers to young men in Harlem.

Q: Tell us about the Young Men's Health Clinic.

A: Young men usually come into the clinic for work, sports, or school physicals, but we will also have a conversation about sexual and reproductive health, since that's an important part of their lives at this point. Many times we will have a health educator or counselor in the waiting room that will talk to patients about different health issues such as STDs and mental health. These professionals also help patients understand what's going to happen during the clinic visit so that they are prepared for their appointment. The clinic also provides: HIV and STD testing and counseling, and mental health screenings and counseling for issues such as depression and anxiety. We also talk to our patients about substance use, whether it's alcohol, marijuana or other drugs.

Q: What are some outside resources that the clinic offers?

A: The Young Men's Health Initiative, under the direction of Bruce Armstrong, the founder of the Young Men's Clinic is an important service that links our patients to other programs, such as workforce development programs and GED preparation programs, as well as other health-related assistance. All patients are screened for depression. Other mental health issues are discussed with our patients. Our full time staff is fully capable of diagnosing and treating most issues. When necessary, we refer to our part-time psychiatrist. We have a focused and limited set of medications on-site, which are given to the patient according their diagnosis. For certain medications that are covered, the clinic utilizes the New York-Presbyterian Hospital pharmacy assistance program, which gives our patients access to low-cost medications at pharmacies around the community.

Q: When is the clinic open and where is it located?

A: The clinic is now open on Mondays from 8:30am to 8pm, Tuesdays from 8:30am-7pm, and Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30am to 7pm. We are located at 21 Audubon Avenue, first floor, on the corner of 166th street. However, please call us at (866) 463-2778 before you come in to make sure our hours have not changed.
