Did you know...it is important how you store your medications?

How to store your medicine:

  • Medications must be stored under proper conditions (e.g., the right temperature and humidity, and protected from light) to keep it fresh.
  • Some drugs are very sensitive to changing temperature and sometimes lose their effectiveness if it is stored at the wrong temperature.  Please check your bottle for storage directions or ask your pharmacist.

Some examples of different storages for different medications include:

  • Insulin: needs to be kept refrigerated until it is opened to maintain potency.  Once opened, it is good for 30 days. However, if the insulin changes color before that time, it may need to be replaced.
  • Suppository:  needs to be stored away from direct sunlight or high temperature since heat may melt it.
  • Child safety bottles, containers and caps are required for drugs in households that have little children.
  • Never store medications in bathroom cabinets.  The humidity in your bathroom can affect the strength of the medication
