Did you know that a lack of sleep can be the reason you can't loose weight?

We all heard that the longer you stay up at night, the more you may be eating which may contribute to your weight challenge. However, lack of sleep may play an important factor in your weight gain along with the late night snacking. A study conducted in 2009 in Sao Paulo, Brazil shows that, adding hours and depth to your sleep results in weight loss. The study found that while sleeping you burn three times more fat then when lying in bed awake.  In another study, participants on identical diets that slept 5.5 hours lost lean muscle, as opposed to those sleeping 7+ hours who lost fat.

Michael Breus, PHD and blogger for WebMD suggests tips for making your bedroom skinny so that you may sleep more soundly. These include; keeping off the snooze button, power down 1 hour before sleep, light any pathways to the restroom, using the right mattress and pillows, and using a sound machine.

I agree staying up long hours may not be helpful for weight loss. According to the article, if you're not getting enough sleep, you could be experiencing: 1) Weight gain because you're not burning as many calories compared to if you were getting quality sleep, and 2) Crankiness from fatigue. I noticed recently that i start to gain few pounds, and I do stay up late and eat some snacks. I have almost 2 hrs. of sleep every day. So i realize at this point where it comes from. I need to sleep more and eat less. No one wants to look bad because of not getting enough of sleep. If not getting enough of sleep, morning may be very tiring, and person might feel very angry. Most people require at least 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep to function productively. Taking a nap during a day may be very helpful too. It's like recharging the battery of your cellphone. You might be very busy throughout the day, however, you might consider finding time for 20 to 30 mins. of taking a nap. So, if you want to avoid gaining extra pounds, do not go to sleep late. Stay healthy and sleep on time.

Weight loss aside, I heard that in order to get a better night's sleep you should stay away from the TV and Internet one hour before going to sleep. Instead, try reading a book or magazine or spending time with family members or roommates.

I used to fall asleep with the TV on every night and now that I've stopped doing that, I've been able to sleep more restfully at night. Reading a book makes my eyes tired and clears my mind of the day's stresses and can be super important in getting a good night sleep!
