Church Food...revisted

Sorry for the delay with the video clips. My editor has been backed up with other projects. Hopefully I can post the clips demonstrating some alternatives to holiday cooking by next week.

But while you all are waiting I would love to hear about any changes that you have noticed when you go to any family or church events where the menu is notorious for being heavy on the grease and sugar.

I was able to expereince change at my own church. We always serve brunch after church to make sure our elderly members get a "good" meal before they go home. During one of our recent brunches everything prepared was according to a diabetic diet! Hoorary for progress!

But Wait Another Change -

I attended my niece's wedding in Washington D.C. and at the reception guests had a choice of vegetarian hors d'oeurves and a vegetarian entree,

But Wait - There's More!

My mother went to an old fashioned afternoon Baptist church program and instead of serving fried chicken to the congregation for dinner they served baked!

Ok, Ok I know this is not a big deal for many of you already living a healthy lifestyle, but for many of us in ethnic-American communities this shows that change for the better is definitely in the air.

So write back and let me know the changes you have witnessed with yourself or family members, be they big or small.

Years ago my parents cut salt from their diets. They pretty much don't cook with salt, and if they do, it's pretty minimal.

My friend not only had a vegetarian option at her wedding but she also used eco-friendly silverware and dishes (made out of bamboo instead of plastic/styrofoam). I was very impressed!

Hi!
I'm a journalist for another food Web site called NY Food Chain. I'm writing a story on soul food. I'd love to hear from the writer of this blog and anyone else about community level changes that are encouraging healthy soul food - such as a church.

I'm actually looking to visit a church tomorrow as well.

If anyone has any tips on good places to check out please email me at winnie.andrews@gmail.com

thanks!
