How do we stop the spread of unhealthy diets at black church functions? I know most outreach is through schoolchildren, but I think we are missing the boat with black churches.
My church recently had a chef's buffet where we handed out the American Heart Association Healthy Soul Food recipes. We prepared an all you can eat buffet with recipes from the book. Everyone enjoyed the food and they didn't miss the extra grease, sugar and salt.
Anyone that's been to a black church function can take a quick at a glance survey to see the numbers of us suffering from effects of poor diets, swollen ankles, eyes with dark circles, canes, walkers and large bellies.
I really would like to expand this effort amongst black churches. I produced a series of receipes on video that I hope to post on this site soon, but I would love to know what other outreach efforts as far as healthy food for the old school church crowd is being promoted

I agree 100 % , when many of my patients come in with elevated sugar and blood pressure, they often tell me because of ribs or cake they had at church. I recently held a heart and soul food seminar, but older church members do not typically come. I would like to know if you have a way of surveying those who went to see if they actually cooked differently at home after the event. How were you abe to obtain so many copies of the book to give away .signed Noelli Center
